Library Reminiscing.

My hair has turned out rad, if I do say so myself. I was a little wary about the Herbal Essences dye, since those women on the commercials having scary fake orgasms in elevators tend to scare me. I don’t think anyone should be having elevator orgasms involving more than two people. But it’s a nice color - no yellowish undertone. Nice and unnatural and white, to match my nice albino complexion. Whee.I’m almost done with my third Harry Potter, and boy, am I smitten. I was going to wait for the fourth one to come out in hardback, but there is just no way in hell I’ll be able to. Love it, Love it, Love it. Reading Harry reminds me of frantically reading Tolkien under the covers as a kid, hoping to end the chapter and find out if Bilbo Baggins would survive his next catastrophe before my parents confiscated the flashlight. Why the hell was reading in bed so wrong, anyway? I could have been smoking pot or sacrificing small animals; but no, I was reading like a good little geek.
I was a serious geek. There was a library about two blocks from the house I grew up in, and I used to go there every few days and get a big old stack of books to stagger home with. I’ve always been somewhat of a speed reader. I loved the library, just to soak in the quiet. I still love going to the library. The silence is so wonderful and refreshing to me, and I love those little study carrels that make you feel as if you’re hidden from the eyes of the world. As a child, going to the library was the only way I could find an escape from my incessantly screaming parents, and it was also the only way I could escape from my own budding self-doubt. That’s why I loved(and still love) heroines like Anne of Green Gables. Anne had some cojones, yes siree.
I was the librarians’ darling, until I hit about 10 or 11 and got sucked into the vile world of the kiddie flesh trade(child modeling). Even then, I read C.S. Lewis and Stephen King while the other girls were reading Teen Hunky-Poo or Underage Slutwear or whatever magazines young girls read.
I could exist for months with no human contact if I had enough books. I wonder if that’s weird.
Books don’t yell. They have no expectations. They are compelling and inviting. They don’t judge. If they scare you, you can put them away, or you can read them in a safer place. You can put them aside for days at a time, and they’ll forgive you and allow you to back up a bit. They make you happy, empathetic, smart, kind, open-minded, understanding, and more well-rounded. Rarely have I come away from a book and felt cheated, even if I didn’t care for it. There’s always something to get out of a book. They don’t make demands, either. They simply sit on your bedside table and hope to be read.
God, I love to read. I hope I can one day finish the damned Great American Novel that is rotting on my hard drive, and give someone just one of those good feelings.

I’m in a sappy mood. Don’t mind me. I’m going to sit here, finish my Harry Potter, and imagine I’m at a scarred, heavy, old library table in old, dusty library with no computers; reading my little heart out while I listen to someone flip gently through the card files.
