Hot Hot Heat.

I am madly, madly relieved that some the SSI money came in before the furnace crapped out. (And also that we learned that the furnace crapped out before we all croaked from carbon monoxide poisoning, of course. Eep.)
I’m glad to be able to do this for my mom. I am also planning to recarpet the house for her birthday, something that I think she’d really like, so I guess these are some good thing I can do before I go Roth IRA shopping.
I found out that the remainder of my backpay is coming next week, and after that we’re going to be pretty secure.
It’s strange, really. After five years of waiting and waiting and living as cheaply as possible and tweaking out about any unforeseen expenses, something as major as the furnace going on the fritz is OK.
It’s a nice feeling - not being cold, as I currently am, but knowing that we’re OK and that finally, I have an income and a good amount of savings in the bank.
Now I just have to get it through the J-Man’s head that no, he is not getting a laptop for his room due to this windfall, and that no, we will not be purchasing a home theater for the basement complete with leather theater seats and huge movie screen like my cousin’s house.
At least the child dreams big.
So, I have about fifty CDs worth of completely legally obtained MP3s from back in the Napster days that I had burned onto discs and removed from my computer during the brief scare years ago that the MP3 police were going to come and get me, and I’m in the process of uploading them all onto iTunes.
I forgot I had some of this stuff! Four discs of Elvis Costello? My Fugazi! Three discs of Portishead! A shitload of John Lee Hooker and BB King! The Dead Milkmen! VNV Nation! Depeche Mode for days!
I am going to be jacked into this iPod for the rest of my life and may never communicate with actual living people ever again.

Be thankful that you have the money to buy a furnace when you need it and don’t have to finance the damn thing. Not what you wanted to spend your money on, I know, because when I have some extra cash, I always get ahead of myself and….then I have to use it on a necessity like NEW TIRES, dammit.
