Post-Weekend Wrapup…

I love drunken sports fans.
Going downtown on the train Saturday night, there were about forty thousand men returning from South Bend and the Notre Dame football game, all of whom were drunk, most of whom were sharing beer and ice and crazy stories about women.
The best thing I heard? “I’m not about to flirt with other women around her - she’s IRISH.”
The other men immediately broke out into a chorus of agreement.
It made me think of a line of Sylvia Plath, for some reason:
From the ashes I rise with my red hair,
and I eat men like air.
I’m red-headed, so I thought about turning around and giving them a snarl; but I’m not Irish (to the best of my knowledge), so I didn’t think it would be very effective.
My date went very well - we had a nice dinner with an almost unbelievably soprano-voiced gay waiter and then went to the punk rock club, where we spent a while trying out some new shots at the request of my favorite bartender, who is, I think, a little sadistic.
Have you ever had a “cement mixer”? My advice to you: Don’t. Unless you like chunky liquor.
Apparently I will drink anything put before me. I’m an easy mark.
Some good suggestions for shots names floating around the bar:
shot with a roofie in it: “Just Drink It, Little Girl”
shot with a Vicodin in it: “Happy Fun Shot”
I’m sure you can guess which one of those is my idea.
And no, I didn’t actually drink one.
I’m not that bad. Sheesh.
I like this guy - perhaps too much, in fact, which probably indicates that he is either a) an asshole in disguise, b) psychotic, c) in possession of terribly annoying habits that will come to light, d) a secret Creed fan, or E) all of the above.
Let’s hope it isn’t D.
So far he seems to be quite normal and even smart, socially competent, and fun, but we all know that I am incapable of being attracted to such a person, so time will tell.
In financial news (Jen has financial news! Shock and awe! Shock and awe!) I am investing eighty-five percent of the Social Security backpay money into IRAs and I feel like such a damn grownup that it’s thrilling, really.
There was the furnace and hot water heater, and I have to pay the J-Man’s tuition and would like to get new carpeting for the house, and then there were a few incidentals that I thought were nice little luxuries for us all after being broke for so long, but the rest is going, and now the J-Man’s SS checks will also go into savings and mine will be what we use for monthly expenses and perhaps for a new computer as well, since this one seems to be gasping its last raggedy breath.
I cannot possibly express how nice it is to be able to have savings to fall back upon should my family need it. After years of this Social Security bullshit, I feel like I can finally breathe.
I’m very happy.
And if I were giving out any medical sort of news this month, which I most assuredly am not, since it is October; I would ask that you wish me luck for tomorrow.
But I’m not. So don’t.

Some unasked for advice: I don’t know if you do market based or fixed rate investing, but rather than just an IRA, I would strongly recommend a few fixed rate cd’s. Later on, you can roll it over into an IRA when the CD matures. CD rates right now are AWESOME!

i’ve heard of the cement mixer. i think it’s served to a person on his/her 21st birthdays as his/her 21st shot, to ensure that he/she pukes and doesn’t die of alcohol poisoning. yummy! and you know, even if he is a creed fan, at least it’s not soul asylum.

Hey, I’ve been reading you for maybe four years or so (the only blog I’ve ever followed for more than a few months), and I’m so glad to read about you finally getting that money! I can just imagine what it must feel like, and it makes me happy to know you and J will at least be relieved of one worry. I hope the lack of that financial burden will free more room for happy things in your life.

I really want to have kids some day, but I want to wait like four more years first, and sometimes that feels like such a long time from now. Reading about J and your thoughts and experiences with raising him kind of tides me over and renews my enthusiasm for being a mom someday. I’d like a son like J, and I like the way you raise him.

Cement mixers are EVIL.
Especially when people don’t explain them to you ahead of time. They just say “Here, take a shot of THIS! OK, now hold it in your mouth and take a shot of THIS! OK, now SWISH!” and then cackle gleefully when your eyes grow wide in horror at the realization that your beverage is now solidifying in your mouth at an alarming rate. The stuff is so vile that it takes you three or four attempts to get the congealed mess past your gag reflex and down the gullet. And it’s all you can do to keep from throwing up right there in thei middle of the bar. Because who drinks shots expecting to end up with a mouthful of cottage cheese?!
It’s drinks like that that make it hard to trust your bartender ever again.
