Hit Me Baby. One More Time. Really.

October 26th, 2006 by Kevin

Most of my musical tastes run through the rock/punk/industrial vein, and I also have a strong taste for blues, soul, and old rap music; but while riffling through my MP3s in order to put stuff on the iPod, I’m noticing that I have a lot of truly weird - and maybe downright embarrassing - shit in my files.A few offerings from the inexplicably enjoyed random tunes of Jen Trance:

A Chorus Line - “One”

Afroman - “Because I Got High” (I don’t even get high…)

More Bee Gees songs than I care to admit

Bring It On - Opening Cheer

Britney Spears - “Hit Me Baby, One More Time”

The Cha Cha Slide, The Casper Slide, The Mississippi Slide, The Bus Stop (we are some emphatic steppers in this house)

Chicago Bears - “Superbowl Shuffle”

five Justin Timberlake songs

Lionel Richie - “Hello”

Liza Minelli - “Cabaret”

everything Michael Jackson did in the eighties

Vitamin C - “Volare”

What are your dirty little musical secrets?

I’m almost known for my broad (read: cheesy) taste in music, but some of the gems in my collection: Wham!, The Carpenters, Debbie Gibson, Britney Spears, Neil Diamond, Fergie (even I can’t believe I have that one), etc. I really could go on for a long time on this one.

I have the Wham Christmas song. :)

Toxic would have been acceptable, but you’ll be docked a point for Hit Me Baby. JT is completely allowable, but any N*SYNC tracks are out of the question. You would be completely disqualified for K-Fed. Black and Mostly-Black Michael is also permissible. White MJ is not. Liza Minelli may be punishable by death in some states. See your local listings.

Fifth Dimension. THREE versions of “A Taste of Honey”. Life is A Rock (but the radio rolled me) . Some Captain and Tennille. “Oh Shelia”.

You can fit a lot of cheese on a 30g drive…..

All Elton John, Alan Jackson, Herman Hermits, Celine Dione, Meatloaf, Bob Segar, Eagles and Manheim Steemroller for Christmas. Now, are you still going to admit knowing me?

Dolly Parton, Neil Diamond, Linda Rondstat, Bee Gees, Jim Croce, to name a very few. I love random posts like this one.

I can forgive you everything but Mannheim Steamroller. GAAAAAAAH

  8. trancejen wrote on 10/26/06 at 3:21 pm :

Colz, I LOVE “Oh, Sheila”. A Classic.

And Dom, I call bullshit on taking away a point on “Hit Me, Baby” but liking “Toxic”. “Toxic” is cheese trying to be cool. “Hit Me, Baby” is cheese being what it is. PROUD CHEESE.

Oh, Jen. I don’t think we can hang out anymore.

If you’re trying to find dirt on me, hmmm… I guess the oddest ones would be the soundtracks to Brazil, Miller’s Crossing, and Amelie. shoved between all the punk and blues. Oh, and two discs featuring the orignal songs/skits from Mystery Science Theater. But every album of mine is worth having and worth being jealous over.

Dean, you’re a SNOHHHHB. You have NO random favorites? NO stupid pop songs you’ve ever taken a shine to and have snagged on MP3??? COME ON!!

I envy your record collection, though. I’ll bet it’s the shit.

Who can fuck with Neil Diamond, Robin? No one, that’s who.

Bring It On: Best Movie Ever, and Mike: Green Bay?

Jenny, that’s my favorite part of the song, when they’re all cracking up…

I’ve got a lot of New Age music, every song Sting sang in his entire life, Boy George, Avril, “Notorious” by Loverboy, a couple Van Halen songs and “The Politics of Dancing” by The Re-Flex and a bunch of Duran Duran. Don’t tell anyone.

“Virtual Insanity” - Jamiroquai …need I say more?
Plus I got made such fun of when someone found out that Lisa Loeb song was on my iPod…I don’t even like it that much, I just love girl-singers. Lita Ford, Liz Phair, B-52’s, Stevie Nicks, Teagan and Sara, …I thought the Violent Femmes was a girl group for quite a while. I’m not even that embarassed to say I have a double-CD of Jim Croce. Liz Phair is much more embarassing…

I have an entire playlist entitled “I’m Ashamed…” It mostly consists of boy bands, teen queens and hip hop divas.

It’s like candy for your musical soul. You know, the overwhelmingly cheap stuff that only comes out for Halloween or Easter. (Parker? Something begining with a Z?)

You know it’s not good for you, but you just can’t bring yourself to give it up.

  22. dataslave wrote on 10/26/06 at 9:59 pm :

Guilty (pleasure) as charged, your honor.
Old school- Richard Marx, Mister Mister, Fever Tree, Art Garfunkel Disney Girls (the whole freakin album). Nothing like singing “Angelea” at the top of one’s lungs in a top-down convertible at a red light to disturb, er, “entertain” one’s traffic compatriots.
New school- Ani DeFranco, Andain, Dierks Bentley, Letters From Cleo,
Super-duper-guilty pleasure requiring many Our Father’s- Lords of Acid.

  23. dataslave wrote on 10/26/06 at 10:03 pm :

Backstreet Boys- “I Want it that Way-ee-ayy!”. Sang it once at karaoke and KILLED! Layed waste to the room. Not because of me, but because it was EVERYBODY’S guilty pleasure.

  24. dataslave wrote on 10/26/06 at 10:08 pm :

Layed?! I’m not that drunk, really I’m not….

  25. Meshugga wrote on 10/26/06 at 11:50 pm :

Spice Girls. I can now freely admit to that one. I have all their albums and I can’t stop liking their jams even though, let’s face it, they’re pure pop crap. But they have a power over me. I’m particularly enamored with “Say You’ll Be There” and “2 Become 1.”

Oh, and I have obscene amounts of John Denver. And I mean OBSCENE.

  26. skibigsky wrote on 10/26/06 at 11:56 pm :

Ziggy Stardust, and the Spiders from Mars. Yup. Bowie at his best. And actually, when I was relistening to it, it really IS Bowie at his best. But on the flip side, I’ve got all sorts of Irish folk music that drives the spouse crazy. And, of course, the required Bee Gees. *ahem.

  27. Betty wrote on 10/27/06 at 6:24 am :

I have an entire playlist dedicated to hair bands! Bon Jovie (which is fine) to mr big and cinderella!

I have a bunch of george michael, Michael Jackson from the 80’s (is the shit) Janet Jackson from the 80’s and Paula Abdul!

Gee I didn’t grow up in the 80’s early 90’s hahahah!! you have to chalk it up to the equivelent of our parents listening to the stones, the beatles, earth wind and fire!!

You know, tonight I had the punk night DJ with the new owners, who asked me to go a little more mainstream. Since I don’t have mainstream records, I did punk covers of mainstream records. Some of which included:

    Hey ya (Outkast) - Supersuckers
    Uncontrollable Urge (Devo) - Econochrist
    Summer lovin’ (Grease soundtrack) Vandals
Rock n roll part one (Gary Glitter) - DI
Viva las Vegas (Elvis) - Dead Kennedys
Folsom Prison Blues (Johnny Cash) - Christ on a Crutch

And about two hours of additional music. You would have been proud.

  31. monkey-king wrote on 10/27/06 at 7:42 am :

For example onn why I rule: “I feel pretty” from the West Side Story soundtrack, done by Schlong, with a trombone and punked out.

“Higher” by Creed. WHAT??? It’s just one song and it’s not like I even like Scott Stapp! I also have Paul Simon’s “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover” and Europe’s “Final Countdown”. DO NOT JUDGE ME!

Dean, I love that Dead Kennedys cover, it’s awesome. I haven’t heard any of the others, except I think Folsom Prison Blues. You need to guest DJ out here in Chicago one night at the punk rock club, they’d love you.

Is it the Scorpions that sing “When the Children Cry”? I have hilarious video of a friend playing Karaoke Revolution and doing that one, dramatically.

Melissa, I also have a Steppenwolf album. I won’t tell anyone if you don’t.

Thing that makes people stare the most when it comes on at my house: Gilbert & Sullivan. You should hear me belt out “Three Little Maids from School.”

Anyone remember that scene in Tommy Boy when Spader and Farley are switching radio stations in the car, and they find a cheezy 70’s soft rock station and soon they are singing along to Air Supply or whatever? Great guilty pleasure music movie scene!!

How about Barry Manilow? Copa Cabana, anyone?

Oh, and I just saw a infomercial on TV for a 70’s soft rock CD collection, and I TOTALLY wanted to buy it! “Baby Come Back” by Player, “Sad Eyes” by Robert John…C’MON!!!

    I truly have issues…
