Give Some Love.

You could buy your brother another ugly sweater this year. You could ply your kids with eight hundred cheap plastic pieces of crap that they’re only going to play with for a week before going back to their damned video games.
Or, you could put aside some cash for people who really need it.
Here are a few links to some excellent charities. Take some time to peruse a few during this holiday season, and decide whether or not you can spare a few bucks for those less fortunate. Every little bit counts.
Thank you.
The Network For Good (links to many other charities and reputable charitable organizations)
Happy Holidays.

I’ve never been so sure about the Salvation Army. Take a look at the controversy section of their Wikipedia entry. Makes you go hmmmmmm…

I don’t agree with the hiring practices and internal policies of the Salvation Army, but they raise a shit-ton of money for the poor and for national disasters in this country, and I find it hard to say, “let’s not support this huge philanthropic organization due to its CEO’s unfortunate prejudice.” I don’t assume that most of the people who work there work there because they’re nasty bigots. I feel that they’re probably there out of a desire to help people, which they do.
I don’t know. Does this indicate that I am not supporting human rights as much as I should be? I sincerely hope not, as I am an advocate of gay marriage/equal rights for everyone. I feel that not donating to the Salvation Army would sort of be sad, as it is so accessible to a lot of people, but YMMV. There are certainly thousands of other charities to choose from. I’m interested to hear other peoples’ opinions regarding this issue, and please let’s not have this sink into a flame war…

Thanks for the list, Jen! It’s always nice to think of others this time of year!

I haven’t commented in here since forever, but since I am now a professional
beggarfundraiser, would you be interested in linking to the organization I work for? It’s the Sylvia Thomas Center for Adoptive and Foster families..http://www.sylviathomascenter.org Website isn’t much, but then again, we’re still small. And God, I hope you edit your comments before they are posted so you don’t think I did this just to get our organization noticed! Happy Holidays to you and yours!!FrozenTundra wrote on 12/15/06 at 4:27 pm :
Completely random: What lipstick are you wearing in your userpic? It looks like MAC Russian Red. Either way it’s awesome. Wish I could pull off reds like that!

Joe Hill once wrote:
And the Starvation Army they play
And they sing and they clap and they pray
Till they get all your coin on the drum
Then they tell you that you’re on the bum
(and the chorus, for fun)
But you will eat, by and by
In that glorious place above the sky
Work and pray, live on hay
You’ll get pie in the sky when you die.
That was in response to the Salvation Army’s “efforts” on behalf of starving workers in the early 1900s.
