Gonna Be Movin’.
February 22nd, 2007 by Kevin
Pointless Banter is going to be doing some restructuring (unstructuring, rather), and I need to relocate. I’d love to get some feedback.
Should I:
Take my ass back to Diaryland
Go to Blogspot
Other
Realize that I’ve jumped the shark and shut the shit down
Your opinions are, as always, appreciated.
Unless they suck and/or are stupid.
Veronica wrote on 02/22/07 at 1:25 pm :
Wordpress. Everyone loves wordpress these days.
(Don’t go back to d-land.)

Meshugga wrote on 02/22/07 at 2:47 pm :
Although I personally use Blogger at the mo’ (mostly because I host my own website on a homegrown server and am too cheap to buy the backend software to support WordPress or Movable Type), I would highly recommend WordPress. Their stuff is easy to use and to me it tends to be more versatile and stable. Not to mention that Blogger hath really pissed me off ever since they forced me to go Beta. The headaches I’ve had with their newest offering far outweigh the joys of finally having post tags.
robin wrote on 02/22/07 at 2:57 pm :
I use blogger and it’s, uhm..just okay (okay, too much American Idol for me). Not great, not horrible, just okay. But Diaryland, are they still around? Started out there myself….
Lorrie wrote on 02/22/07 at 3:26 pm :
I like Blogger! Just click “save as draft” every once in awhile when you’re writing a long post, as Blogger occasionally makes posts go bye bye.
Amanda wrote on 02/22/07 at 3:45 pm :
I’m a big fan of wordpress.com myself.
golfwidow wrote on 02/22/07 at 3:54 pm :
There’s always MySpace. You’re already a known quantity on there.
I like Moveable Type myself, but as long as you keep writing, I’ll be happy.
Carrie wrote on 02/22/07 at 4:02 pm :
Stay at your own domain and use Wordpress. If know-how is an issue, I’ll help you out. I run 3 wordpress blogs and have set up 3 others
If you need to change hosts, I heartily recommend SRI Hosting. I run 4 sites there, have had 0 down time in almost two years and their support is top notch. Plus, they are cheap and have great features.
I’ve had horrible experiences with other hosts and there is just no comparison.
Wrin wrote on 02/22/07 at 4:18 pm :
Anywhere, as long as it does RSS
Kathy wrote on 02/22/07 at 4:50 pm :

Anne wrote on 02/22/07 at 5:43 pm :
no, no sharks. Yes! Keep writing! Move to…would have to be recommended by someone else. I’m not that ‘blog’ savvy. My D-land is just enough for me.
Laura the Live wrote on 02/22/07 at 6:12 pm :
Please for the love of everything holy and good (or evil and wonderful), do not stop blogging! I don’t know what I’d do without your witticisms (and everything else that makes you wonderful).
I will echo the above, wordpress is probably the better choice. Or diaryland. But just not blogger–I’ve used them recently and their beta version is TERRIBLE. It glitches all the goddamned time and posting photos is a pain the royal ass (as it alters your post–long story).
So, anywhere you go, make sure you let us know. And pleasssssssssse don’t stop…blogging (set to the tune of “don’t stop believing”). I’ve followed you from diaryland (as I know others have) and will follow you elsewhere.
Sandy wrote on 02/22/07 at 6:58 pm :
I vote Blogger too. And PLEASE keep on writing!!
Nightowl wrote on 02/22/07 at 8:01 pm :
If you stop blogging, the ninja monkeys will hunt you down and chain you to a computer. They wil then force you to type and drink Coke and eat cap’n crunch all day long.
Just a warning.
dataslave wrote on 02/22/07 at 8:04 pm :
you went up the shark ramp, purposely drove off the edge into the tank, and kicked the shark’s ass. since there are always more sharks, you gotta keep your shark-beatin’ skills sharp. keep writing. Where you want to stick it depends on how much work you want to put into the nuts-and-bolts of it. Blogger looks like a decent alternative.
Kristina wrote on 02/22/07 at 9:04 pm :
Well, I was at Dland, and I’ve done Blogger, too, but I have no experience with Wordpress. Blogger’s not bad, but I’ve never done a picture-blog entry, and you’ve done a few of those.
Please don’t stop writing, and please, not Myspace. Pretty please with sugar on top.
Mish wrote on 02/22/07 at 9:24 pm :

ey wrote on 02/22/07 at 9:51 pm :
No jumping the shark, and anything but MySpace. Blogger’s beta is annoying, but maybe that’s only true if you’re used to the way it was before (?).
Melanie wrote on 02/22/07 at 10:12 pm :
Sweet Baby Jesus, don’t go back to d-land! You got OUT, girl! If you go back, the aforementioned Baby Jesus will weep!
maddy wrote on 02/22/07 at 11:25 pm :
You have NOT jumped the shark. And wherever you go, we’ll keep reading. I no longer keep an online journal, so no good suggestions from me, just wanted to add to the ‘keep on writing’ sentiments!
ThatGrrrl wrote on 02/23/07 at 5:18 am :
I vote for anyplace that 1-is NOT myspace and 2-does the feed thing. Other than that, the only requirement is that you let us know where you’re going so we can meet you there. Because a day without Trancejen is like a day without…. ummmm….. (c’mon people, help me out here!) Hell, I don’t know, I just know that I don’t want to find out.
Emma wrote on 02/23/07 at 5:39 am :
Jen, you are the Pied Piper and I’ll have you bookmarked wherever you are, but holy moly, back AWAY from the Diaryland. I hope you carry on, because when I read that entry with the “Jesus salad-spinning Christ”, I laughed so hard that juice went up my nose. No-one else’s diy expletives even come CLOSE to yours, lady.
Allyson wrote on 02/23/07 at 7:23 am :
please don’t blog only at MySpace. My computer at work won’t let me go there, and you’re the first blog I check each morning. I will be ALL out of sorts, and won’t be able to figure out what I’m supposed to do with my day if I can’t at least try to read your update. (Seeing as how your updates are not exactly “daily.”)I like diaryland, because I wouldn’t have to change the address in my favorites, but as long as you leave a forwarding address, I’ll follow you.
clahnamom wrote on 02/23/07 at 11:28 am :
Where you go I will follow. Although I’d rather not have you go to MySpace.
Jane wrote on 02/23/07 at 12:56 pm :
I use Blogger with my own domain. I hate Blogger sometimes–it gets slow, and it eats posts, and uploading pictures can be infuriating, but it’s easy to use in general. And Google owns it now, so there are some nice integration features with Gmail.
Bozoette Mary wrote on 02/23/07 at 3:16 pm :
Do keep writing, please do. Please do not go to MySpace. Otherwise, no opinions… I’ve heard good things about Vox, though, and it’s free.

I am going against the herd and vote D-land. Sentimental reasons. And that it makes my life easier. Love my buddy list. Hate trolling through bookmarks, the new browser will NOT let me prioritize or sort. Pain in the ass. So, just for my own selfish please I beg you to come back. ~LA

Kizz wrote on 02/23/07 at 5:25 pm :
Yeah, what Meshugga says about Blogger. Everyone I know is moving to Wordpress and I’m thinking about going just because Blogger forced me to change a bunch of stuff and move to the Beta and pledge my first born to Google and whatnot.
Carol Elaine wrote on 02/23/07 at 6:34 pm :
I’ve been on Blogger for 3 1/2 years and like it fine, but I do not like the new integration with Gmail - I have a billion (i.e. three) Gmail accounts, but only one Blogger account and it annoys me that I have to constantly log in and out of Blogger, because I’m checking my billion (i.e. three) Gmail accounts throughout the day.
Then again, most of y’all probably aren’t email address collectors.
Wordpress looks really good - I may be moving my blog there this year. A friend moved from Blogger to Wordpress and loves the hell out of it. He said the conversion process was almost painless.
Nik wrote on 02/23/07 at 6:50 pm :
I notice you already use WordPress, so it looks like you just need a new domain, unless you jump ship. I don’t have a website myself (anymore, I did use Diaryland) but the people I frequent most either use WordPress, Blogger, or Moveable Type. The Bloggers complain lots. The WordPress people love what they’ve got. I never hear anything good or bad about Moveable Type.
Your diary is one of the ones I’ve read for the longest time. I started before you left D, and I don’t think you’ll jump the shark for me anytime soon.
sethra wrote on 02/23/07 at 9:39 pm :
I was on DLand for a while, too. Then I moved to MySpace. Yeah, I know. I’m going with the herds, but they’re free, they offer more “toys” than Andrew @ DLand ever will, and they’re free. Besides, most of us have a profile there anyway. Might as well put it to good use. And if you’re cheap (read: poor) like me, free is good.
And did I mention they’re free?
carl wrote on 02/23/07 at 10:51 pm :
There is typepad.com, but you have to pay for it.
Hope that you carry on with your pointless banter! You are a very expressive writer!
Kyla wrote on 02/23/07 at 11:02 pm :
I am partial to LiveJournal, MySpace, Xanga, and Diaryland. I however really enjoy reading your journal especially since reading your journal is how my girl and I finally got my neurologist to diagnose me with BAM. So PLEEEEEASE do go. Just move to another journal.
Kyla wrote on 02/23/07 at 11:03 pm :
I meant to say PLEEEEEEASE DON’T go. sorry.
Kari wrote on 02/24/07 at 8:58 am :

I’m at Typepad.com and really love it, but I’ve used Blogger, too, and it’s really good. I really like the ability to organize my entries into catagories, which I can do at Typepad but couldn’t at Blogger. I also use Wordpress for my journal, but I must admit I don’t really like it as well. It’s a bit too complicated for my tiny brain. Whatever you decide, Jen, please don’t quit writing, and please don’t go to MySpace exclusively - eww!
caradawn wrote on 02/25/07 at 2:00 pm :
I’d side with the unpopular dLand, but I know you’re probably looking for something with options and i’m just partial because i don’t need no options, so that’s where I stay.
I guess I’m another old TF reader from back-in-the-originally-at-that-”O”-site days.
I don’t like MySpace since you have to be a member.
Just my pennies.
Kungfukitten wrote on 02/25/07 at 3:18 pm :
I vote for Diaryland! Doesn’t wordpress require you to have your own domain and do all that stuff? I’ve got a blogger account so I can leave comments on my blogger buddies’ accounts but I find it hard to configure and customize, but that may be because I didn’t spend enough time working at it. Matress Police has a blogger account and has a really neat customized blog.

Jersey Nick wrote on 02/25/07 at 4:56 pm :
Kungfukitten mentioned that she found Blogger hard to configure, but they’ve recently revamped it. I’ve locked up your trancejen.blogspot domain and sent the invite to your Gmail. Write me if you have any questions.

I like your dland one *am stubborn and still use your re-direct*, but please no myspace, please!!
Jenn wrote on 02/27/07 at 7:35 am :
Either buy your OWN site and WordPress it (I had someone do it all for me for about $100 including a custom design and it’s anywhere from $5-$20 a month to upkeep it, depending on storage size). Or go back to Diaryland. Blogger sucks and is inconvenient for people who aren’t bloggers — they may not want to sign up and you’ve lost a commenter/reader….plus their designs suck! Nicole hates them!
jen wrote on 02/27/07 at 7:44 am :
I also still use your redirect from dland. I stay there because I can’t be bothered to upkeep my own site, the idea of moving seven years of archives gives me hives, and it’s cheaper than the other comparable solutions. I like the buddylist too. But, typepad seems more grownup for some reason… anyway, you know what they say…
if you have a feed, they will read!
boredlaura wrote on 02/28/07 at 5:22 am :

Maile wrote on 03/5/07 at 4:22 pm :
