Lollapalooza Recap.

August 7th, 2007 by trancejen

I don’t have pictures from Lollapalooza yet because my old, groaning computer is protesting wildly at the thought of accepting any new data, but allow me to tell you that it was a fantastic, fantastic time. And, thanks to a plethora of diet pills mixed with the new up-your-blood-pressure medication (sorry, doctor, I know I’m evil): no passing out!

We managed to catch quite a few bands even though we missed Friday. Among them: Stephen Marley, Cold War Kids, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Spoon, the Heartless Bastards, Amy Winehouse, Paolo Nutini, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, Yo La Tengo, Modest Mouse, and Pearl Jam.

Good times!

Among my favorites were the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, whose singer Karen O. has a flair for theatrics and went through a series of wild head-dress changes. She was skanking around the stage like a wild woman, and let me tell you, it made a person want to really rock out.

Iggy Pop made the news when he invited people to come up on stage, wound up with about EIGHT THOUSAND, got buried, lost his microphone to a succession of kids who yelled shit like “YEAH, IGGY!” “Fuckin’-A!!”, and then eventually reclaimed the stage to say, “OK, let’s simmer down now.” Hilarious. Slightly scary, but hilarious.

Modest Mouse were incredible. Just incredible. I have always been a little bit in love with Issac Brock and now, well… swoon.

Pearl Jam was great as can be expected, and Eddie Vedder got political as can be expected when he started a rousing chorus of “Don’t Go… BP Amoco.” because BP Amoco plans on dumping a great deal of toxic shit into Lake Michigan. (Oh, and by the way? FUCK BP Amoco. Buy your overpriced gas elsewhere.)

The festival was actually not as overpriced as I would have imagined. They actually offered reasonably priced vegan food, much to my delight. It’s pretty rare to find good healthy fare that’s not ridiculously priced at those things.

Bullshit and I really enjoyed ourselves. It was nice to get out and enjoy the steaming hot weather and be among a bunch of fellow music fans. We’re both avid people-watchers, so we had a great time scoping out the weird novelty t-shirts and the kids with the fucked-up haircuts and just kicking back.

On Friday we met Heather for a few drinks at Simon’s before her author Q&A and book signing at Women and Children First, which is probably the best little bookstore in the city and such a good place to sit and hang out.

I was sad to hear that W&C is having financial troubles and I hope that everyone who reads this site that is from Chicago will go give them some business - they’re seriously such a great, great place and I would hate to see them have to close their doors.
We wound up going out to a karaoke bar afterward and then to a martini bar as well, because as much as Bullshit and I swore we’d be in bed every night early before Lollapalooza we are both pushovers who love a good time. Plus I wanted to finally meet Heather’s Mark (not to be confused with Maker’s Mark), and I did, and he was fucking cool as one would expect. He even threw down some Star Wars geekitude, which drew him extra points with us, because we are geeks of the highest magnitude. At least, Bullshit is. I’m sort of a mid-range geek.

It was fabulous to see Heather and hang out. She’s such a dynamic person, and she’s just a lot of fun. I haven’t seen her since Austin, so it’s certainly been a while. She also got me thinking about writing again, which is good.

So go see Heather, and go buy her book, S.E.X., which is available from Women and Children First online!

I’m going on vacation with my mom, the J-Man, Bullshit, my sister, and her kids for three days.

Pray for me.

Happy Tuesday.
