Crash.

Let this be a lesson to me. I spent seven years writing and writing and taking photos and taking photos without backing things up onto disks.
All gone.
My hard drive crashed, and the data was unrecoverable. My genius friend Chris is at work still trying to pull stuff off of the old drive, but we spent three hours on it last night before installing the new drive in this machine (I sucked it up and bought one because I still want to use the old box for the J-Man) and couldn’t retrieve Jack shit.
I’m pretty crushed. I had somewhere in the neighborhood of five hundred bookmarks, about three thousand music files, I don’t know how many photos, and a lot of writing on that drive. Stupid, stupid, stupid to have neglected to back it up, especially in this day and age when they have those tiny little USB drives that are so convenient. Stupid.
I have the diaryland journal on disks, so I’m not concerned about that. I wouldn’t really have been too concerned about that, anyway.
What really bugs me is the loss of all those photos. The music files are largely all on my iPod, the writing was mostly crap (and hopefully this will inspire me to start over and write some non-crap), and the bookmarks, although it will be a huge pain, can be replaced; but the photos can’t.
Never again will I take digital pictures without backing them up on disk.
Hell.
To lose seven years of writing is irritating but is, in a sense, a very good thing. I was waffling, putzing, fucking around. Now maybe I will get down to something useful.
Here’s to new beginnings.
Tonight my father and I are going to see a hypnotist.
I will tell that story tomorrow.

That stinks. You’ve scared me into looking into backup. But I put almost all my pix up on Flickr which is sort of an online storage for me then. And there are tools to download all your pix off of Flickr if you lose your harddrive.

I have all my photos backed up to a couple of USB backup drives and I am STILL paranoid. I for the life of me cannot get an external CD writer to work for more then a few months. Yes, my computer is so old that there is no CD writer.
