My genius friend Chris hammered away at the old hard drive at work (he is one of the computer gurus at the large local steel mills) for a few days, and he was able to recover almost everything on it!
All my photos, Word documents, and almost all of my music files have been saved. AWESOME. I could not be more thrilled.
The Rilo Kiley show was awesome. Unfortunately Bullshit and I had to go and sit in the balcony because I was feeling too crappy to stand for an entire show, so I couldn’t really see much of anything except the fact that Jenny Lewis was wearing something sparkly gold; but they sounded great.
They played several songs from their three previous albums such as “With Arms Outstretched”, “Portions For Foxes” (of course), and “Wires and Waves”; which were of course very well-received. I was actually surprised to hear a couple of songs from the new album missing, notably “Under The Blacklight”, unless it’s something I missed when I was in line for the bathroom.
I was pleasantly surprised by their musicianship. I mean, Rilo Kiley is a band I really like, but I don’t really think of they as being ground-breaking rock musicians. They really put on a good live show, and I was particularly and unexpectedly impressed by the drummer, who rocked out a few solos with some pretty rock-worthy flair.
Interesting fact: “The Smoke Dectector” does not have a corresponding dance. Who knew?
It was a fun show. The crowd really got into “Breakin’ Up”, Blake pulled out a little ukulele and got everyone roaring for “Ripchord”, and ” Silver Lining”, “Close Call”, and “Moneymaker” got huge applause.
I was sort of amused by the fact that they played a remix of “Give a Little Love” (The song I vehemently hate) for the encore, particularly since Jenny Lewis took a moment beforehand to defend the song, claiming that it was inspired by LL Cool J’s “I Need Love”.
Apparently I’m not the only person who hates “Give a Little Love”.
We missed a lot of the opener, Jonathan Rice, but what I saw was pretty good. Did I hear rumors that he was dating Jenny Lewis, or was that someone else?
It was a great show, and we had a really good time. Afterwards we took the Red Line to North Avenue and then walked to Exit and had a few beers, where we dished with the bartender and listened to some poor blond complain that her tits were too big, and didn’t get home until four AM.
I haven’t been out until four AM since I have no fucking idea.
Good times.
I’m currently preparing for my trip to Cleveland Clinic in two weeks (!). Bullshit’s dad is generously allowing us to use his frequent flyer miles so that we can fly there, so now I’m just preparing hotel arrangements and trying to figure out how long we’re going to be there. The Clinic isn’t helping, and so far has told me that I’ll be there “as long as I’ll be there”. Thanks a lot, Cleveland Clinic.
I’m sort of nervous about this whole thing, but I’ve been through most of these tests before, so I guess it can’t be any worse that it’s been, and I suppose I can’t be any worse off than I am right now. I just hope that they’re able to do something for me.

I’m really glad you had a good show. I was on the lookout for you, but we were down on the floor. The first opener, Grand Old Party was better than Jonathan Rice. He was pretty formulaic. GOP had a chick as a drummer/lead singer and she had a very powerful Meg-White voice. The RK show rocked of course, much due to Jenny’s hot pants and white tights. She is the cutest performer in business. Plus, like you mentioned, they did every song we love. I couldn’t have asked for any other song we didn’t get. All my favorites. Blake’s Elected song with the little mouth-keyboard was crappy. But everything else was golden. The jams were epic and the encore was brilliant. Good times. Next time we’ll have to plan to hook up after the show.

Now. What have we learned? Get thee to a computer store and purchase a backup solution and software. Then USE them regularly. Like, weekly, or whenever you think of it. Set a reminder.

I thought that Jonathan Rice started lame and got a little better. That first song was a shoe-gazing emo me-and-my-guitar-are-going-to-weep-now song, then something a little indie, then sort of a country-rock thing, which I sort of liked. And that’s when we decided to find a seat, in the balcony, and by the time we got situated, they were playing kind of like a typical Austin-bar-band country rock thing. Not bad, but yeah, nothing I’ll remember by this time next week.
Rilo Kiley were great though. Very fun show. Great lead guitar. A little pop for my usual taste, but most of their songs have catchy hooks, and I’m a sucker for that. Especially “Portions for Foxes” which has great hooks, great arrangement and great lyrics.
That’s my 2 cents.
