But Will I Be Able To Fast Forward?

I’m back. I’ve actually been back for about a week, just chilling and being tired from the new meds and doing a little Christmas shopping and sleeping a lot and basically staying under the radar.
I’m doing OK, I guess. I’m definitely feeling better than I was. Still very tired.
On Friday I am having surgery to have a Reveal Monitor implanted. The monitor is about the size of a pack of gum, and it will be implanted in the skin of my chest. It comes with a little remote control, and there’s a button I press every time I pass out. Then, information from the monitor is sent directly to the hospital. After a month of monitoring, this will determine whether or not I need a pacemaker.
I’m sort of nervous about the surgery, primarily because it’s one of those outpatient dealies very similar to the pacemaker surgery in which I will be awake and given a local.
A local. Weak.
I’d rather be given a general anesthetic. Bring on the fucking drugs, man. I’d rather be knocked out cold with a damned mallet, sent off to la-la land with little birdies a-twittering about my head, doped up with morphine, given some smack, whatever. Local anesthetic, to me, seems wussy; and I just have this image of sitting there watching these sinister assholes hacking into my chest while I cry and cry and feel every cut.
God.
Hopefully I’m worrying for nothing and it’ll be a breeze.
Anyway, I’m glad to be back from my bi-yearly stint at the local nuthouse, catering to your friendly neighborhood blogger’s major depressive disorder and also the the most chatty schizophrenics, who sit at the dinner table and talk freely of babies being raped.
I shit you not.
I am very glad to be home.

Local sucks, it’s true, but think of it this way: if you can still feel what they’re doing, you’ll be able to tell them. If you have awake paralysis under general anesthetic you wouldn’t be able to holler at them.

Welcome back. I hope that device shows the docs something useful. Really useful. Ditto what Jas said about the anesthesia. Give ‘em hell if you feel it. Hopefully they will give you a nice dose of IV relaxation along with the local. I imagine they don’t want you to flinch as they are working so maybe.

I’m glad you’re back! My mom had a pacemaker installed — she’s 96 — and it went just fine. So I’m willing to bet that the monitor deal goes well too. I’m thinking of you.

Hey Jen, glad to hear that your back and doing better. FWIW, I ditto what everyone else says about your surgery anxiety. If you are really nervous about it, I would push your doc for twilight sedation so that you’re out of it enough to not know what’s going on during the procedure (it will also wipe out any memory you might have of the surgery.) Like I always say, a little Versed is a very happy thing indeed.
Hope the new monitoring thingie helps the doctors figure out the heart fuck thing.

HI Jen…glad you are feeling better. A few months ago I had my thyroid biopsied and the doc just sprayed my neck with cold numbing spray which did nothing but numb the top few layers of skin and then he inserted a very long needle right into my neck…five times. That sucked but it was quick and I have cool pictures of the bruise.
